Dewey’s 24 Hour Read-a-Thon

Here we go! I’ll be updating this post throughout the day. Not quite sure I’ll make it the full 24 hours, but if I make it through to the wee hours I’ll be happy.

8 am (Hour 1)
Introductory Questionnaire
1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today?
Richmond, Virginia
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to?
I’m super excited to get to Golden Boy…that’s my reward for making it to the late afternoon/evening.
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to?
I picked up some Blue Bell Banana Pudding ice cream in case of emergencies. I hope there’s an emergency.
4) Tell us a little something about yourself!
This is my first read-a-thon, so I hope I make it through!

I made some changes from my original plans (you saw that coming, didn’t you?) and I’m starting with this one In Between Days by Andrew Porter.
10 am (Hour 3)

I’m not much of a single sitting reader on any book, regardless of how much I’m enjoying it, so I knew going into this I’d be alternating back and forth between (at least) two books at once. Right now I’m about a quarter through In Between Days – which I’m loving! – and nearing the halfway mark of Immortal Bird. Once the sun hits my front porch, pup and I will be parked out front for the afternoon.

11 am (Hour 4)
I won a prize!

3:00 pm (Hour 8)
I’m still alive! My husband and I planned to break for brunch at some point, so that threw me off track a bit, but I’m okay with that. I started my porch reading not too long ago and it’s been glorious. In Between Days picked up quick and I’m almost finished.

4 pm (Hour 9)
In Between Days is in the bag! The ending got pretty suspenseful for this contemporary fiction reader. I was on the edge of that porch chair. Going to work on Immortal Bird a bit more and start rewarding myself with the one I’ve been really looking forward to.  Golden Boy by Abigail Tarttelin

7 pm (Hour 12)
Mid-Event Survey
1) How are you doing? Sleepy? Are your eyes tired?
Feeling the drain. I haven’t napped and I’m starting to wonder if that was a mistake.
2) What have you finished reading?
3) What is your favorite read so far?
That’s the only one I’ve completely finished, but I’m allllmost done with Immortal Bird. Golden Boy is already blowing me away.
4) What about your favorite snacks?
Chocolate covered pretzels are long gone and I have a sneaking feeling that ice cream is about to come into play.
5) Have you found any new blogs through the readathon? If so, give them some love!
I’ve found quite a few through the tag on Twitter! Two new faves are Scuffed Slippers and Wormy Books… and Page Plucker.

9pm (Hour 14)
Just finished book two (Immortal Bird) as we move into the 14th hour. Including some of Golden Boy I’m around 800 pages so far. I had to take a quick detour to entertain a poor, neglected pup.
11 pm (Hour 16)
Golden Boy is really tugging at the ol’ heartstrings, but it’s great so far. It made my leap to the end of May worth it. Ice cream has been pilfered. Waiting for the husband to get home from work and wake this house up a bit, even the dog is fast asleep.

7 am (Hour 24)
I fell asleep somewhere around 2 am – just before Hour 19 – but I’m back up to squeeze in one last hour of reading and finishing up my review of In Between Days, which I started during a break yesterday. It should be up later today!

End of Event Meme
1. Which hour was most daunting for you?
Definitely Hour 18ish, it started to get rough…
2. Could you list a few high-interest books that you think could keep a Reader engaged for next year?
It sounds like people were having success with graphic novels. I’ve been meaning to read My Friend Dahmer, I probably should have picked that up, too!
3. Do you have any suggestions for how to improve the Read-a-thon next year?
Since this is my first time, it seems to have gone really good!
4. What do you think worked really well in this year’s Read-a-thon?
I’m impressed by how well organized everyone was!
5. How many books did you read?
6. What were the names of the books you read?
In Between Days, Immortal Bird and half of Golden Boy
7. Which book did you enjoy most?
I haven’t finished it yet, but so far I like Golden Boy the most
8. Which did you enjoy least?
Immortal Bird was a little slow for a read-a-thon
9. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? What role would you be likely to take next time?
Unless I have a schedule conflict, I think I’ll definitely be reading again next time!
  • Good luck!

  • Congrats on winning a prize. I just found out I won one too! Yippee! Hope you are enjoying your reading today and able to stay on track! Here’s my Dewey’s Read-a-thon post if you’d like to stop by.

    • Congrats, it’s exciting! I stopped by and took a peek – I’ll definitely be by again when I have more time tomorrow.

  • Happy reading! I freaked when I saw I had won something, too!

  • Looks like you’re doing well – congrats on winning a prize!!!

  • You’re doing awesome! My husband threw me off too with needing to run errands before he left for work. Now I’m free to read more. Keep up the awesome reading!

    • Thank you! My husband headed off to work this afternoon, so now I have to blame my distractions on the dog :)

  • My in-laws came to visit and take me out for a birthday dinner. It was a great time, but now I have to get back into reading!
Congrats on finishing your second book!

  • Hi Shannon,
Your doggie looks so cute! So you know the woes of doggies wrangling for attention during the Readathon. I love that yours crawls in your lap. Mine tries to but she is pretty big (95 lbs), so I think that is why she has been stealing my reading seat. Thanks for the comment and …

    Happy Reading!!!

  • Great job on the challenges chica! I didn’t get around to any yet…yikes! I’ve been reading and cheering like a fool though :)

I hope you had an ice cream emergency…or two!
