Getting Ready for BEA

looking forward to BEA 2014

One week from today I’ll be hopping on a train here in Richmond and traveling up to New York City for Book Expo America. The BEA Bloggers Conference takes place on May 28th and the convention itself runs from the 29th-31st. Am I excited?

People Are Real, You Guys

Hands down, the thing that I’m most excited about is meeting the people behind all these blog posts and tweets.  I don’t know if there’s anything better (or slightly more terrifying?) than making the internet come to life for a few days.

New York City

I’ve been to pretty much every major city on the East Coast except New York City, which means this trip is long overdue. There are so many places in New York I’m dying to visit, which likely won’t all happen this trip, but will hopefully encourage a few more follow up jaunts to NYC.

Trains!

No, not subways. Been there, done that. But I’ve never been on a train-train. It’s weird. I haven’t lived on the East Coast all that long. But I’m really thrilled about the thought of six non-flight hours in a quiet car with just me, my book and my laptop.

Okay, fine. Books.

It’s what all of this is about, right? I would be lying if I said I didn’t have a list of some highly anticipated titles that I’m really hoping to grab. Plus, there are a few authors that  I can’t wait to embarrass myself in front of (here’s lookin’ at you, Meg Wolitzer!).

If you’re headed to BEA, let me know so we can awkwardly meet! But if you’re not, make sure to join up with Armchair BEA – it’s the BEAs knees…I’m walking away now.

  • Have fun at BEA, Shannon!! I wish I was going but there’s always next year, right?

    • There is! I was only a few months into blogging at BEA time last year, but I was determined to be there this time around.

  • Cataluna6

Oh Man! So jealous :) BEA sounds like a lot of fun, , hopefully I can time a trip O/S with an expo or conference. Have fun!

    • It definitely makes it a little trickier when you have to come from so far, but doing double duty like that would make it worthwhile :)

  • Haha! I can’t wait to follow along and read all about your experience!

  • Have an awesome time!! I’d love to go one day :)

    • Thank you! I hope I can go again and you’ll be there ;)

      • Yes! That would be fantastic :) NYC is so cool, too. My husband is going tomorrow through Saturday (his music is being performed at Carnegie Hall!) and I wish I could tag along this time!

  • Ti Reed

Have fun and wear sensible but stylish shoes ;)

  • Words for Worms

I’m walking a fine line between insane jealousy and incredible excitement on your behalf! Trains are pretty fun! Sometimes I’ll take Amtrak into Chicago just because parking downtown is misery. Interesting characters if you want to people watch, but easy to ignore the world too :). Yay trains!

  • I’m in Oregon, so sadly no BEA for me :( But I just signed up for Armchair BEA! YAY!

  • Kerry M

I can’t wait to awkwardly meet you in real life!!

  • Exciting!! I can’t wait to read all about your adventure!

  • Meeting the people behind all the blogs is going to be so great. That is the real reason, other than books, that I wanted to go to the BEA. Go, have a great time, and then tell me all about it.

  • I’ve never been on a train-train either. Commuter train, yes. Cross-country kind of train, no. And I really, really want to go on one (even though for anywhere I’d want to go, driving or flying always make more sense). Have fun in NYC! I’ve only been there once, but it was great, and I definitely want to go back someday!

  • Enjoy BEA! Looking forward to your posts on the trip!

  • Ah, I’m so excited for you Shannon! NYC is amazing and I’m sure you’ll be able to enjoy it! BEA is a blast and I can’t wait to see your posts about the trip (and that 6 hour train ride, which sounds marvelous!).

  • Jenny @ Reading the End

Aw, I wish I still lived in NYC so I could see everyone! I have been happy as a clam since moving back to Louisiana, but it makes me sad that I won’t get to meet up with the book bloggers who come to town for BEA this year. :(

    • It would have been so great to see you! Since you know the city, though, if you want to throw any food/drink/anything else recommendations my way, I’m totally open ;)

  • Jennine G.

This would be an awesome trip! You’re going to have so much fun. I hear it’s in Chicago next year?

    • I think there’s one more year in NY and then it switches to Chicago in 2016.

      • Jennine G.

Awesome! My goal is to make it one of those two years!

  • Ohmygosh, I am so excited, too! It’s going to be a ball.

Also, trains are the best. I thought about taking the train, but flying was just so much faster! Somehow your train trip from Richmond to NYC is multiple hours shorter than my train trip from Buffalo would be.

  • Hope you enjoy BEA, it’s such a great experience. If you are there on Saturday maybe I’ll see you around !

    • I’ll be there until about noon-ish on Saturday and then I have to catch a train back, but I’ll keep an eye out for you!

  • Jennifer Smeth

Have the best time! I so wish I was going!

  • Oh my gosh have soooo much fun!

  • I am SO excited for you. I can’t wait to hear a full, and detailed! report. I’ll have to live through you :D

  • Hope you have an amazing time!! And the blog looks great. Glad you were able to get it all moved over before your trip to BEA!
