It’s Monday, February 9th. What Are You Reading?

monday

We’re gearing up for a busy week here in River City Reading-land. My schedule for work is pretty zany, I’m hoping to catch Roxane Gay’s reading on Thursday and my husband and I are making a trip back to Michigan next weekend.

With all that’s coming up, I’m glad I was able to squeeze in a bunch of reading over the weekend. I’ve been kind of grabbing whatever calls to me and it seems to be working quite well. I decided not to hold out on Toni Morrison’s Gold Help the Child any longer and flew through E.C. Osondu’s This House Is Not for Sale as soon as it hit my mailbox, too. Right now, I’m working my way through Slim and the Beast by Samuel L. Barrantes and Jill Alexander Essbaum’s Hausfrau, which I am absolutely loving.

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?

  • Yeah, I’m gonna need to add all these books to my TBR.

  • I want to read all of these!! I have the Osondu on my shelf, at least.

  • Kathryn Trask

Hausfrau looks and sounds interesting from the blurb on Goodreads so I’ve added it to my possible reading list.

  • I can’t wait to get to Hausfrau. Sounds delightful.

  • Am keen to read God Help The Child. Not sure why I’ve waited either….

    • I usually try to wait until a little closer to publication date, but it’s such a short book that I figured I could read it again if I wanted a bit of a refresher ;)

  • Glad to hear you’re loving Hausfrau! It’s on my list, but I didn’t get an ARC, so will get to it after it’s released. Also interested in This House is Not for Sale. Enjoy Roxane’s reading (I bet she’d be great to hear in person!) and your trip!

  • Tea Time with Marce

This House is Not for Sale – I’m intrigued with title and cover, never heard of it.

    • I think it’s been a bit of a quiet release. It read a little like short stories, if that’s something you’re interested in.

  • I want to read Hausfrau SO BAD! But I’m holding off until after Geek Love. Or so I tell myself. Good-lookin’ books!

  • I’m so jealous you’re going to see Roxane Gay! And I’m so intrigued by Hausfrau.

  • Susan W

I’m in the middle of Americanah, and boy oh boy does it live up to all the talk. Soooo good. I have Hausfrau up next, really glad your loving it. I was totally sold when it said lovers of Claire Messud, as I loved The Woman Upstairs.

  • Nishita

I love that cover for Hausfrau. So beautiful, I could frame it.

  • So lucky you can see Roxane Gay! I hope it is fantastic. I’ve been looking for another Toni Morrison to read, and that one looks like it will be great – now I just have to wait until April…

  • Slim and the Beast sounds right in my wheelhouse and I’d not heard of it, thanks for the heads up. I’m recovering from Lou Berney’s fantastic The Long and Faraway Gone and picked up Richard Lange’s short story collection, Sweet Nothing, which is really good thus far.

    • Slim and the Beast is the first novel from Inkshares, which is a new crowdfunding publisher…it’s a pretty interesting concept and the book is great so far.

      • That does sound interesting, I had no idea. Makes me all the more curious to check it out. Thanks!

  • I finished up Annihilation and Bones & All over the weekend. I’ll be writing a longer review for B&A, but I have to say, I liked it more before her mention in her acknowledgements about reflecting on flesh-eating. I feel like she ruined so many of the interesting metaphors I had in mind!

Anyway, this week I’m going to dig back into The Book Thief, and I’m also buddy-reading The Lathe of Heaven with Julianne of Outlandish Lit, so you can probably expect some snarky chat-logs to pop up on the blog sometime soon.

    Happy new week!

    • I wanted to like Bones & All more than I did…I think I just wanted a little more from the writing, maybe? It felt a little flat to me. It was a quick read with a good story, but wasn’t quite what I was hoping for.

      • Yes, I totally understand that. It also seemed to wrap things up a bit too neatly near the end (though with one major heartbreaker, you probably know which), and… yeah. I definitely wanted more than what was there, too!

  • When is the Morrison book coming out? I just finished American Sniper and now need to read Sadie Jones’s Uninvited Guests for book club. Have you read that one? Hmm

  • This House is Not For Sale hit my mailbox this week too. Hmmm…I’ll have to give it a good look! I hope you love Hausfrau, I sure did.

  • AnnabelSmith

I really need to read another Toni Morrison. Beloved was so amazing. I’m reading Russell Hoban’s Riddley Walker. It’s an astonishing book. Very hard work but worth the effort. It’s firing up my brain!

  • Shannon, I just finished Hausfrau a couple of days ago and really enjoyed it; can’t wait to hear what you think!!
