It’s Monday, March 6th. What Are You Reading?

monday

I know some of you just got snow yesterday, but Spring finally made its way to Virginia and I couldn’t be happier. I switched out my winter clothes, hung some ferns on my front porch, and now I have a week off to enjoy the weather. Hopefully, that means more than a little time reading in the sun. I picked up a copy of Dept. of Speculation from the library to re-read for an upcoming discussion in The Socratic Salon and gobbled that up pretty quick this weekend. Now I’m reading The Fishermen by Chigozie Obioma and Hold Still by Sally Mann, which have both been waiting patiently on my shelves for some time…I’m super excited to dig in.

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?

  • I’m so jealous of your weather! I got a little taste of the 70’s last week in Richmond (reason number 500 why I want to move back there), but am now back in New York and we have some days in the 40’s coming up. This is not spring. Enjoy your porch reading!

  • I’m really really curious/excited about The Fishermen! Hopefully it turns out to be good! :)

  • Shannon, I’m sort of reeling from My Sunshine Away; I finished it early yesterday and it was FANTASTIC! I’m now reading a nonfiction selection, Natural Born Heroes, by the author of Born to Run; it’s pretty good, so far. I’ve got to get to Dept. of Speculation! I don’t even know what this is about, but y’all have me curious and I want to be able to jump in on The Socratic Salon!! Hope you enjoy your vacation!!

    • Dept. of Speculation is a SUPER quick read (less than 200 pages), so it would be fun if you could squeeze it in!

  • We’re finally getting some decent weather in Wisco as well – FINALLY – we shall see if it lasts. I’m going to try and re-read Dept of Speculation as well. I think I wasn’t in the right frame of mind the first time I read it, so it didn’t really resonate with me. Interested to hear about your other current reads :) I’m reading “The Children’s Crusade” right now, about 25% in and the verdict’s still out.

    • I’ve heard a few different things about The Children’s Crusade…looking forward to seeing where you fall!

      • At first I wasn’t sold, but in the end really liked it. It’s not necessarily anything special, but enjoyable none-the-less. Read it in 2 days, so that must mean something…

  • Jennine G.

It’s supposed to be 60s but rain off and on this week here in Ohio. My lilies and host as are poking up in the flowerbeds, but I haven’t removed the dead stuff from last year yet. We always get a few frosty mornings up until Memorial Day and at least the dead stuff will protect the new plants.

Let’s see, hopefully finishing “At Home” by Bill Bryson this week and “At the Water’s Edge” by Sara Gruen

  • Julie @ Smiling Shelves

It snowed here yesterday (almost an inch), and today it was 60 degrees and sunny. Crazy Michigan weather. :) Enjoy your week off!

    • I just talked to my dad in Michigan yesterday and couldn’t believe it was snowing there! I hope the warmer weather sticks around for you.

  • I was underwhelmed by Dept. of Speculation. I’m sorry! I did like that it brings up lots and lots to talk about though, so discussion should be good!

    • Oh, I don’t think you’re alone (I know many people hated it), so I think it will be good to have your side in the chat ;)

    • I was just heading to the comment section to say the same thing, Monika, so at least I’m in good company! I was very underwhelmed and yet can’t wait for the discussion, because I know it will be smart and full of good points. I won’t be making any of them, I read it so long ago I don’t even remember why i wanted to chuck it. :)

  • Really looking forward to getting your $.02 on The Fishermen, Shannon, I’ve not added it to the queue yet. I just started Our Endless Numbered Days to try and cram it in before the Salon chat. My tree book is Richard Price’s The Whites. I haven’t read any crime fiction in a bit and really need to get back in my wheelhouse for a while. It’s great, so should fill the bill quite nicely!

    • I just started Our Endless Numbered Days earlier today, too…I was behind on that one! The other girls all finished their chat, so I’ll just be joining in on the comments, but I’m glad I’ll be able to squeeze it in.

  • AnnabelSmith

I loved Dept of Speculation! Hold Still has a gorgeous cover. I’m reading Stoner and it’s not exactly knocking my socks off. Next up: How to Be Both.

  • I’m thinking a quick re-read of Dept. of Speculation is in the cards for me too!

  • So very jealous about your week off & the pretty weather! Still high 40s here… I need some sunshine and sun dresses already!

Hope you love your new reads. I thought of you today because I just am starting to dig into Tell the Wolves I’m Home, and it’s the first book in a long time that’s had me breathless from the start. I remember you mentioning that you haven’t had a book knock your socks off in a while, either. Fingers crossed this keeps up!
