It’s Monday, June 8th. What Are You Reading?

monday

So, its June, huh? Somehow I went about doing all the start of the month things without actually absorbing the fact that we’re halfway through the year now. I don’t have very many books lined up to review for the next few months, so it’s been great to make giant hold lists at the library and catch up on titles I’ve been wanting to read. I’m so glad I listened to Canadian bloggers like Naomi at Consumed by Ink and picked up Fifteen Dogs by André Alexis—SO GOOD. I’m following more of her advice (and that of many, many others!) in moving on to reading Us Conductors by Sean Michaels next. I’m also about to jump into I Saw a Man by Owen Sheers, which sounds like it could be a bit of a knockout in the best way—we’ll see!

I shared my thoughts on A God in Ruins over at The Socratic Salon last week, where we have a good discussion going for those who have read the book. This week we’re talking about audiobooks and have a discussion of All the Birds, Singing by Evie Wyld coming up if you’d like to stop by!

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?

  • I’m so excited about you reading US CONDUCTORS. So great. And I’m going to pick up Fifteen Dogs this summer when I’m back in Canada. Go CanLit!

  • It’s so good to see two Canadian books on your list today! Yay! And, thanks for the mention, Shannon!

  • It’s so nice to be able to slow down and catch up on older titles. It looks like you’re having a great week of reading!

    • I gave myself a nice little retreat by not requesting much through June and July, so I just have a few unsolicited books I can pick up if I want to…and it’s definitely been great.

  • Fifteen Dogs is new to me, but I’ve gotten so many great recommendations from you before, I’ll mark it. Ahh, the holds list. I have a secret love affair with my local library .

  • Ooh, I remember April talking up Us Conductors, but then it totally fell off my radar. I’ll need to remedy that!

Have I mentioned how excited I am for the All the Birds chat? I have? Oh…

  • I had never heard of Fifteen Dogs, but it’s getting added to the list! Hope you have a good week :)

  • I haven’t heard of any of these, except I Saw A Man. Will be looking forward to your thoughts!

  • I’m really struggling with the fact that it’s already June, Shannon…good grief! I’m currently reading (and almost finished) Summerlong by Dean Bakopoulos; it’s just dark enough to keep me interested and I love that one of the characters is an almost-90-year-old grandmother who uses the f-word all the time and smokes pot because “it helps with everything.” Hope your Monday is going well!

  • Well, I picked up Fifteen Dogs this weekend as you know. Seems like I Saw a Man might be another to check out. I finished Vicki Pettersson’s Swerve over the weekend and had to pick up the new John Sandford Lucas Davenport entry for something less tense and violent, so that should tell you something about Swerve. I really liked it, it was quite a ride. Next up is Paul Lynch’s new one The Black Snow (tree book) and The Hand That Feeds You (ebook).

    • I really liked Paul Lynch’s last book, so I can’t wait to hear what you think of this one!

      • I loved that book after I got into the language (it was a struggle at first, a unique writing voice for sure). I’ve been meaning to review it and now it’s been so long I probably can’t, so hopefully I do a better job with this one.

  • My bookseller was JUST telling me about Fifteen Dogs this weekend, and I’m so curious. Also looking forward to your thoughts on Us Conductors–I’ve heard good things!

  • Gah! I’ll have to see when the All the Birds, Singing discussion starts. I’ve been itching to read the whole thing since I downloaded the sample a few months ago.

  • How is it already June! The year seems to have zipped by, although my spreadsheet tells me I have read many, many books so far this year. This Monday I’m reading a hard sci-fi novel about a girl called Jenny who goes to a space-hub university. It was a little hard to get into all the sci-fi terminology, but now that I’m into the swing of things, I’m quite enjoying it.

  • I cannot believe it’s already June. The summer is going way too fast!

  • Julie @ Smiling Shelves

Us Conductors looks quite interesting. It’s crazy how fast this year is going by!

  • Lindsey Stefan

I Saw A Man sounds good. I will look forward to your review!!

  • Luuuuurveddd US CONDUCTORS!

  • By the end I liked Us Conductors but it isn’t easy at first. We’ll compare notes after. :-)

  • I love the cover of I Saw a Man.
