It’s Monday, August 3rd. What Are You Reading?

After a whirlwind July, this week has been all about some nice, lazy reading. The husband and I have been gobbling up Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, which is actually making me excited to have some great TV shows back. We’re not much for randomly keeping the television on, but we do have several shows (Fargo, The Affair, The Knick, Homeland, The Leftovers) we’re anxious to see again.

Even though I haven’t been whipping through the books, there’s still some steady reading going on. I’ve been dipping in and out of the essay collection C.S Lewis & His Circle out of order, reading the memoir section first before tackling the essays. I’m also in the middle of Val Brelinski’s The Girl Who Slept With God and Landfalls by Naomi J. Williams, which are both really wonderful so far.

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?

  • I’m reading Judy Blume’s newest and am not hooked. It’s not bad, but I’m not ignoring my child to read, so that says something.

  • The Affair!! I can’t wait for that one to come back on! And glad you’re enjoying The Girl Who Slept with God..I’ve got my eye on that one if I have time. Have a good week!

    • It’s definitely a little different than what the blurb suggests (more focused on the sister than the pregnant daughter), but it’s interesting…wondering where it’s going to go.

  • Mystica

All new to me. Enjoy your week.

The C.S. Lewis collection sounds right up my alley. How are you liking it so far??

    • I’m just finishing up the memoir/bio sections, so I haven’t gotten to the essays quite yet, but it’s been really interesting – I didn’t know all that much about him, so it’s filling me in.

  • I feel like I’m seeing The Girl Who Slept With God all over the place all of a sudden… must check this out.

  • TV and I just aren’t buds these days, which I guess is a good thing considering I’m just about to hole up for a couple of months with my GRE books.

Glad to hear good things about Girl Who Slept With God! That one hooked me right from its blurb a month or so ago, but I’ve been striking out on the ARC giveaways… ah well, this is what libraries are for!

Hope you continue enjoying your lazy reading schedule. :) I for one am blazing through Pride and Prejudice this week for Austen in August and to give my poor, neglected Classics Club list some love.

    • The Girl Who Slept With God is a little different from what I expected (less focused on the pregnancy, more focused on coming of age story), but I’m liking it so far. Good for you with the Austen in August – hope you’re enjoying it!

All these covers are fantastic. Landfalls sounds the most up my alley. Interestingly, of the two books Girl is compared to, I adored one and hated the other. Now what? :)

I’m trying to finish up Bone Gap ebook and making my way through the wonderful Blood of Heaven on audio (thank you), and just about to crack open Bill Clegg’s Have You Ever Had a Family. I’ve been anxious for that one for a while, very much hoping I love it.

    • The Girl Who Slept With God is kind of slow moving, coming of age story if that helps any – I’m not sure which one of the books that might be closer to ;)

I’m very excited about Have You Ever Had a Family, too!

  • We got addicted to The Affair and The Knick when they were on – are the second series starting over there? I’m hoping that means it’s not too long we have to wait over here! I like the look of the CS Lewis book – I shall await your verdict!

  • The CS Lewis essay collection sounds interesting. As for me, I’m reading Red: A History of the Redhead (which is taking me a long time to finish). Otherwise, I’ve been trying to read as much as possible with my girls before the school year starts.

  • I really like the cover of The Girl Who Slept With God. I might need to check that one out.

  • Does Wet Hot American Summer get better? Because the hubs and I tried watching it, and I don’t know if we just weren’t in the mood or what, but I was a bit disappointed. There’s so many good people in it though, so I’m going to give it a second chance for sure.

    • Did you see the original movie? If not, I think you kind of have to watch that first. It’s VERY campy/ridiculous, so if that’s not your thing, you probably won’t end up liking it.

  • I’ve just finished Days of Awe and I have now started (as of this morning) Everybody Rise. I love, love, love C.S. Lewis; hope you’re enjoying the collection!

  • Jennine G.

Oh, I love Lewis, he amazes me. I’m reading my AP assignment so I can grade student essays in a couple weeks…Reading Literature Like a Professor. Ten – one paragraph essays per student, times 40 students, equals 400 paragraphs. Ugh.

  • I’m a sucker for ship expedition books. Shackleton, Franklin, whatever it takes! I’ll look forward to see what you think of Landfalls. I just finished Circling the Sun and have picked My Sunshine Away from the library. Made a few August picks on my site that I’m eyeing next …

It turns out Val Brelinski is local to my area! She’s going to be at the bookstore in my town tonight! I’m pretty stoked :D
