Library Checkout: November 2015

library checkout

Thanks to the library, my reading for Nonfiction November was very well stocked this year. So well stocked that my hands were pretty grabby and I ended up with many more library books in my house than I usually have at the same time. Thankfully, I controlled myself enough to back off the hold requests for a while so here’s hoping things don’t get too far out of control.

Library Books Read

Lafayette in the Somewhat United States by Sarah Vowell
Voices from Chernobyl by Svetlana Alexievich
Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson
Ravensbrück by Sarah Helm (currently reading)

Checked Out, To Be Read

Being Mortal by Atul Gawande
Burning Down the House by Nell Bernstein
Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
The Hunt for Vulcan by Thomas Levenson
The Fire Next Time by James Baldwin
SPQR by Mary Beard

Returned Unread

Strangers Drowning by Larissa MacFarquhar (DNF)
Refund by Karen E. Bender

On Hold

A Manual for Cleaning Women by Lucia Berlin
Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman
Aquarium by David Vann

How was your library reading in November? Join in by linking up below!

  • Did you ever try Speed Kings? I feel like I remember that being on your pile for NN, but can’t remember. I DNF’d it, but was really disappointed b/c I always get excited for Olympics-related books!

  • I wasn’t a big fan of Jenny Lawson’s first book – what did you think of Furiously Happy?
So curious to hear about Ravensbruck once you’re done!

    • I didn’t end up loving Furiously Happy :/ If you didn’t like the first one, I’d avoid it…the humor was very forced to me.

  • Karen White

Just curious as to why you returned Karen Bender’s book unread? She’s a local author here, but I haven’t yet read any of her books…

    • My hold ended up coming in just as Nonfiction November was starting, so it needed to go back before I got around to it (which ends up happening with most of my books returned unread!) – I’d still really like to get to it.

      • Karen White

Good to know that it wasn’t a bad first few pages or something like that. I will keep it on my list!

  • I’ve only read one book for NFN. Booh! And it wasn’t even one on my list for the month. :) I currently have Being Mortal checked out as ebook, but I fear the loan will expire before I have a chance to finish it. Let’s hope there’s no wait list so that I can renew the loan.

    • I’m really hoping I can get to Being Mortal before it has to go back, too! I don’t know how it kept sliding down my list…I really, really want to read it.

  • I’ve finally moved from number 13 over a month ago to number 6 on my library hold list for Bill Clegg’s book, Did You Ever Have a Family. I’ll be disinterested by the time my number is up in the queue. The only book I’ve gotten from the library lately were a couple of ebooks and The Good Girl, but my wallet sure has a had workout. I wonder about myself sometimes. *smh*

    • Ugh, that must be so frustrating! Library hold lines aren’t usually *too* bad for me, but I’ve heard from others that they can get crazy!

  • You’ll be happy to know I just checked out Tiny Beautiful Things! Yes, I’m determined to read it before the end of 2015. I decided not to put it on hold but just to grab it when it was available and I felt ready.

  • I checked out Challenger Deep months ago and sent it back unread. I am kicking myself now!

  • Are you SO EXCITED to get to Crazy Rich Asians??!!?! How was Furiously Happy? A copy is sitting on my coffee table and I sort of started it once (I was reading something else but it was closer to me at that moment) but haven’t gone back to it.

    • I didn’t love Furiously Happy :/, which was a huge bummer because I really liked her last book. This one just seemed like the humor was a little forced.

  • Being Mortal is definitely on my wish list, Shannon; I may need to go ahead and put a hold on it, but I’ve got so many to read already. You know how that goes! Thanks so much for hosting the link up!

  • You picked some great books from the library! I do have Being Mortal in my own personal library that I want to read sooner rather than later.

    • We’re doing a read-along for my nonfiction book club this month if you want to join in :)

Yay for Crazy Rich Asians!! I am very curious about SPQR too.

  • Being Mortal is one of my library reads this month too :) I’ve also made it through two books for online and in person book clubs this month. They’re pretty much the only thing that makes me make time for library book reads!
