It’s Monday, January 18th. What Are You Reading?

american housewife schools on trial

Hey, look! I’ve been reading! It’s a little more settled here this week, but my books (and a few other things) are still living in boxes until we get our new bookshelves all set. I tried my best to participate in the #24in48 Readathon over the weekend, but spent way more time buying (and returning, ugh) blinds than I did reading. I did try to squeeze in a little extra book time and managed to wrap up what I picked up two weeks ago, though I decided to set Hamilton aside for the time being. I really want to be able to read it when I can focus and enjoy—sadly, now is not that time.

I did start and finish American Housewife by Helen Ellis, which I hope to talk about later this week, so now I’m on to a few more. Gold Fame Citrus is my book club’s choice for this month and I’m super curious about Schools on Trial. Here’s hoping this week’s reading (with today’s bonus holiday) keeps going strong!

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?

  • Amazing that you even got a little reading in with all that is going on. Such a busy time!

  • Yay, I’m glad you managed to get some quality reading in, even if your life got taken over by interior decorating. I was pleasantly surprised by how much reading I got done this week too. Let’s cross our fingers that the trend holds for both of us!

  • Hehe yeah, I just requested Schools on Trial ;)

    • I’m super curious what you’ll think. I finished it earlier today and was…not thrilled. I think you’ll really like his push for free/democratic schools (which I agreed with), but I couldn’t handle the lack of real steps to get there.

      • You know me so well! ;) Really, that’s a common problem in these kinds of books. How many times can we toss around great ideas without suggestions for implementing them…only implementing them for the privileged misses the mark. Ya know?

  • I’ve been seeing mixed reviews about Gold Fame Citrus, so it’ll be interesting to see what you think of it.
    Schools on Trial sounds interesting…

    • I’ve been hearing super mixed things about Gold Fame Citrus, too…if nothing else, it should make for a good book club pick!

  • Glad things are settling down a bit for you! And I’ll be really interested to hear your thoughts on American Housewife…I feel like there are mixed thoughts out there.

    • Definitely seems like things are mixed – I thought there were some weaknesses, but I really loved most of it.

  • I can’t imagine trying to read Hamilton during such a busy time. I don’t blame you a bit! I’m glad you were able to get some reading in. American Housewives is high on my next list.

  • Glad things are starting to get settled in… moving is such a drag. We moved TWO years ago, and I’m still organizing and getting crap up on the walls the such (oops, maybe that wasn’t very encouraging). I seriously CANNOT WAIT to hear your thoughts on Gold Fame Citrus…

    • I know! We were in our last house for five years and it felt like we had *finally* finished things over the last year or two…and then we had to go and move ;)

  • Look forward to your thoughts on American Housewives – I’ve seen the book about but not an actual full on review. Short story collections can be so hit or miss.

I hope you enjoy your upcoming books.

  • I’m hoping my library copy will be in soon for American Housewives. I know a lot of readers have been iffy on it, but I’m looking forward to it. Gold Fame Citrus has been on my TBR list, so I’m eager to see what your take is on it; everything I’ve seen about it is positive, so my fingers are crossed for it. Congrats on getting in some reading time in all the moving chaos! Woo hoo!

    • I really liked American Housewives more than most, I think. Totally snarky and funny – it was a great read.

      • Oh, that’s good to know! I love a snarky wit, so I’m looking more forward to it, now.

  • I’m glad you found reading time in the midst of moving craziness! I’ve heard really interesting things about Gold Fame Citrus, so I will certainly be back to see what you and your book club thought of it.

  • It’s Monday and I’m trying to read some of my older library checkouts before I can no longer renew them! I got too many books out of the library (I recognize this), and if I don’t read them swiftly I won’t be able to. So I’m going outside in a bit to lie in the sunshine under a blanket and read read read.

    • Ugh, I applaud you for trying. I gave up and returned almost everything I had unread because it just wasn’t happening this month. Disaster! I’m sending you all the good library checkout luck!

  • Gina

Can’t wait to read American Housewives!

  • Ciska van der Lans

Yay for finding time to read!!

  • Glad your reading time has expanded more. These look like some thinking cap reads. Enjoy.

  • I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on American Housewife. I’ve heard quite mixed reviews about it.

    • It definitely seems like things are mixed, but I really enjoyed it. It has a certain snarky tone that I can see might not appeal to everyone, though.

      • That definitely sounds like something I would like.

  • Heather

I love the cover for Gold Fame Citrus – I’m excited to see what you think of it.

I’m glad things are a little more settled for you – hopefully you get a good chunk of time for reading soon :-)

  • Parallel & Perpendicular

Right now I’m finishing up Fingersmith. It’s my first bulky novel of the year. I’ve been reading a lot of short novels lately, and I’m wanting to get back into 500+ page books, since it’s the time of year when I never want to go out.

  • Oh, I definitely want to read “American Housewife.” I have heard great things about it!

  • Elena

I loved American Houswife, so can’t wait for your review. And I got myself a RC of Gold Fame Citrus this week, hoping the postwoman doesn’t lose it…

I’m currently reading ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’ by Philip K. Dick because I want to watch ‘Blade Runner’ and read a Spanish novel loosely based on Dick’s masterpiece. I just finished ‘History of Sexuality’ by Michel Foucault, and I think I’m done reading blurry, complex philosophy for the week now :D

  • I’ve heard so many conflicting opinions on American Housewife; I’ll be curious to see what you think! Likewise, I’ve passed on Gold Flame Citrus from the library a couple of times because it just never seemed like the right time to pick it up; I hope you enjoy it!

  • It seems like people either love American Housewife or are ambivalent towards it. I will definitely be curious what you think of it.
