It’s Monday, June 13th. What Are You Reading?

Where You Belong Heavenly Table

After (a bit of) a break last week, things are a little less hectic around here. I have a few deadlines to catch up with this week, but then I’m in the clear. So, in general I’m feeling better, but my heart is much heavier after yesterday’s mass shooting in Orlando. I have so much anger and frustration over the fact that I’ve shared similar feelings so often in this blog’s short life, with added sadness for the LGBTQ community. Big giant sigh.

This weekend I finished reading The Long Shadow of Small Ghosts, which was a bit too true crime for me, though I’m glad I gave it a shot. I also decided to pick up This Is Where You Belong by Melody Warnick and, even though I’m just about halfway through, I’m loving so much of it. Next, I’m jumping into Donald Ray Pollock’s The Heavenly Table, but I loved The Devil All the Time so much that I am VERY NERVOUS. Let’s hope this goes well.

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?

  • I need to read This Is Where You Belong, because I have some crazy wanderlust lately (I’m gonna blame it on growing up a Navy brat).

  • I’m so excited for Heavenly Table…this will be my first Pollock, but you and Rory have sung high praises! Will be starting it in the next few weeks!

  • Still haven’t read The Devil All The Time… oops. It’s on my shelf staring at me for whenever I’m ready though! Hope The Heavenly Table isn’t a letdown for you.

  • I just added This Is Where You Belong to my tbr list, so I’m glad to hear you are enjoying it!

  • Joining you in your big giant sigh.
I love the idea behind This is Where You Belong, so I’m hoping it turns out to be a good one! The Heavenly Table is such a good title – if it weren’t for that gun on the cover, I would think it was all about food. I’m curious, is there food in it at all?

  • Hmm…I may need to check out The Heavenly Table! I’ve just finished Homegoing (so, so good) and I’m also listening to Shrill on audio during my commute to/from work; I never want to get out of the car. :) Hope you have a great day, Shannon!

    • Glad to hear you’re enjoying Shrill!! I bet it’s SO great on audio.

      • It really is! I love hearing her add in her little “footnotes;” she is so great!

  • Both books look like interesting reads. Enjoy!

  • My heart is broken over Orlando. :(

I really wish I’d requested an early copy of The Heavenly Table because I loved The Devil All the Time so much. I hope it’s everything you (and I) want it to be, because I’ll probably pre-order that one.

    • I’m so nervous, but I have to buck up and read it – I’m sure it’s going to be (at least) very good :)

  • I’m going to have to pick up “This is Where You Belong.” I am one of those people who always wonders if I’m in the right “place”….

  • I was glad to have the Tonys to watch last night. What happened in Orlando occupied my mind all day, and it was good to have something joyful (the “better” it’s always supposed to get) as a distraction. This morning, reading the names and seeing the pictures of all these beautiful kids who died has been really hard. I feel really sad and really powerless.

  • I haven’t heard of either of these books! The Heavenly Table looks good- will wait to see what you think as my TBR is out of control!

I’m reading The House of Hidden Mothers and loving it so far. The author is one of those people who writes in a conversational way and it is marvelous.

  • This is Where You Belong was on my June TBR list. Hope the library notifies me soon!

  • Mystica

New to me as well. Enjoy them all.

  • Thanks for the reminder about THIS IS WHERE YOU BELONG, I just preordered it. Given my day job as a community newspaper editor, it seems like particularly relevant reading.

  • I’d be curious to hear your thoughts on The Heavenly Table. I really struggled initially, but it’s picked up some…
