It’s Monday, September 19th. What Are You Reading?

I’m here! I’m trying really hard to make sure I check in, even if reading isn’t happening (it is…a bit). But this week is crazy, so it took an extra push. Now that all the school reading is paired with school writing and measurement training my brain is a little melty. On the upside, I finally have beta access to Litsy for Android and I’m loving it for quick little reading updates, so I may be there pretty frequently. (Oh! You can also hop over to Parchment Girl and read a little Q&A I did if you’re so inclined.)

I took a little too long with The Nix on audio and had to get it back to the library before I finished. Thankfully, I also had the paper version on hold, so I just have about 100 pages of that massive beast left. My plan for last week was to read Maria Semple’s Today Will Be Different, but I got about two pages in before stopping. Don’t run and cross it off your list! There was just something about the voice that was decidedly not the brand of fun I’m looking for right this moment, but I’m sure I’ll pick it up again. I’m thinking I’m going to finish up The Nix and try to jump into Britt Bennett’s The Mothers. Here’s hoping this week is a little more smooth.

It’s Monday, What Are You Reading?

  • Kay

Hope this week is a little more relaxing, but I suspect with school stuff it may be hard to find. Glad to hear you’re trying Litsy. I’m having a lot of fun with it. It’s quick and that’s a plus.

  • OK – I’m concerned about Today Will Be Different. I already saw some pretty strong feedback from someone who loved Bernadette that this one is just not nearly as good. I’m still going to give it a shot when it comes out, but I’m still disappointed to hear all this!

Read your Q&A – fun post!

    • Rebecca Foster

I think that was me ;)

    • I wouldn’t base too much on my quick opinion! It was really more a mood thing than anything (I seriously read 2 pages)…hopefully it will be better the next time I give it a shot :)

  • Kailana

I really should have tried to get the Beta version of Litsy. Oh, well, I can wait a bit longer. Hope you have a great week!

  • Oh! I’m so excited for The Mothers! I look forward to hearing what you think. Loved your interview.

  • Karen

your reading may be taking a back seat compared to previous years but hey, you are still reading!

  • Rebecca Foster

I enjoyed your profile on Parchment Girl :) Today Will Be Different didn’t work for me at all; I’ll be interested to see if you get into it when you pick it back up.

  • Oh, I loved your Q & A post; what fun! I also love that Just Mercy is in your top five; you’re the best. I hope things are going well; I have a local friend who is in a doctoral program right now, too, so…yeah. May the force be with you?? :)

  • JoAnn @ Lakeside Musing

What a fun Q&A! I’m hoping my book club will read Just Mercy this spring and then attend the author’s talk… will probably do it on my own if they decide against it. Hope this is an easier week for you.

  • Ceillie Simkiss

I’m listening to the audio for Graceling (something that’s been on my TBR since 2013….yikes) and I just started Dance of the Jakaranda by Peter Kimini which is interesting so far. I hope you’re able to get into your next book!

    • Nice work attacking the TBR – I need to do that more often!

      • Ceillie Simkiss

TBH, I just got tired of looking at the same titles all the time. So many of these have been on here so long I don’t even know what they’re about.

  • Your books are color-coordinated! Have you enjoyed “The Nix” so far? Bummer that “Today Will Be Different” didn’t grab you right away. I’m definitely planning to read it, though honestly I’m not even sure if I remember all that much about the writing from “Bernadette.” It’s stuck with me mostly because it caused me to add Antarctica cruise to my bucket list.

    • I’m really enjoying The Nix – it’s one of those big, sprawling books that I tend to love, but it’s really well done.

  • Both of the books pictured are new to me and I am intrigued. Have a great week.

  • Mystica

Maria Semple did not impress me much with the earlier book. I wonder how this one would go.

  • Good for you for setting aside the Semple until it’s a better time! I feel like we sometimes force ourselves to push through books that just aren’t right for our current moods, and then we end up enjoying them less.

I have to say that I’m a wee bit terrified of how severely my reading time is about to be cut, but you’re giving me inspiration to keep squeezing it in.

And yes to the quick Litsy updates! Once they figure out whatever’s making it impossible for me to post photos (darn you, new Android OS update!), I think I’ll be using it a TON. I’m already plotting to take screenshots of some of them and repurpose them as mini-reviews on the blog. Because I’m lazy. ;)

    Happy week!

  • Amanda

Oh I can’t wait to hear about the Mothers! Hope it’s a good week!
